***epi publishes its Position Paper on NGT Plant Patenting Proposal of the European Parliament*** epi expresses significant concerns regarding the proposed exclusion of plants from patentability which was inserted by way of amendments into the pending proposal of Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on plants obtained by certain new genomic techniques. epi strongly advocates for the necessity of conducting a thorough impact study before any legislative measures are considered. https://lnkd.in/eMFCJFVu, and https://lnkd.in/edW9c4y2 #Patentability #PlantInnovation #RegulationImpactStudy

Hello patent people. If you are interested in claiming microbes, take a look at our article about depositing them first!
Making a biological deposit under the Budapest Treaty is an attractive way of meeting the disclosure requirements associated with patenting microorganisms. But it is not without risk. Florian and Eliot explore how the Budapest Treaty works, and important considerations for filing strategies and public accessibility: https://hubs.la/Q02lLRWN0 #microbiome #microorganism #patents #BudapestTreaty #mewburnlifesciences #mewburnmicrobiome

European ban on patents for New Genomic Techniques (NGT) plants? The European Parliament has voted to adopt a proposal that would limit the possibility of protecting NGT (genetically amended) plants via patents. The ban is part of a greater European plan to allow certain NGT plants on the European market, a debate that has long been a divisive issue in Europe. While a solution for commercializing NGT plants in Europe was much needed and long overdue, it is unclear how a possible ban on plant patents fits into this debate, let alone should be practically implemented. For instance, it would require a change in the European Patent Convention, which is not straightforward. Hence, companies in the agro sector continue to be faced with uncertainties on how their innovations can be protected. It seems that by trying to solve one crucial problem for the sector, the EU simply introduced another...

Meridian’s Low DNA Taq HS is a highly purified, chemically modified hot start Taq that is ideal for workflows requiring room-temperature reaction setup. In high throughput settings where large-volume sample preparation may take an extended period of time, hot-start polymerases are essential to prevent nonspecific amplification and the formation of primer dimers. Free from animal-derived compounds, Low DNA Taq HS minimizes the potential for background contamination or DNA contamination, which is especially important for the detection of bacterial targets such as E. coli. The enzyme is completely inactive at room temperature and requires a 10-minute incubation at 95°C to release its functional activity. Le et al. demonstrate formation of AAV-like particles in E. coli. Although these particles consist of VP3-only empty capsids, the authors showed that they could be taken up into cells. Further work in this field may build upon these results and aid development of approaches for AAV manufacturing. It should be noted that producing clinically useful AAVs in bacteria is a fair ways off, but this study provides some useful insights that may inform future manufacturing efforts. #biotech #genetherapy #syntheticbiology https://lnkd.in/ge2BgdUQ

2moThis is very welcome. The Parliament is steering the NGT ship towards the rocks. We need able sailors, navigators and captains to sound the sirens to avert calamity. 🙏🏻 EPI. Decisions should be data driven, not based on emotive fallacy.
